Pairing a Fire Table with Outdoor Furniture

A fire table only works as well as the furniture around it. Get the height right and people lean in, rest a glass on the ledge and stay for hours. Get it wrong and the table becomes something to look at from a distance. This guide pairs each fire table height with the seating that suits it, using the published heights of models we carry, then covers materials, lids and tops, and how to keep cushions and fabric at a safe distance.

Match the height first

Fire tables come in four broad heights, and each one belongs with a different kind of seat. The makers publish the height of every model, so there is no need to guess.

Waterstone builds the idea into its bases. The same stone top can sit on a coffee height base (about 22 inches finished with the stone), a table height base (listed at 30 inches) or a bar height base (listed at 40 inches), so you choose the slab you love and then the height that suits your furniture.

A good rule of thumb for lounge seating is to keep the table top close to the height of the seat cushion, so a glass on the ledge is within easy reach without leaning forward. For dining and bar tables, match the table to the chair or stool the same way you would indoors.

Lounge seating around a low table

Most of the fire tables we sell are lounge height, and they pair with deep seating: sofas, sectionals and club chairs with thick cushions. This is the most relaxed arrangement and the one that makes the fire feel like a living room. Because people sit low and lean back, a long table such as the Prism Tavola 6 or the AFD Legend Long L.P. Select suits a sofa facing two chairs, with everyone along the length of the flame.

Dining around a fire table

A dining height fire table puts the flame at the center of the meal, which is memorable on a cool evening. American Fyre Designs makes the Cosmopolitan Square Dining at 60 inches square and 29 inches high, and the Fiesta Dining at 54 inches across and 28 inches high. AFD's Reclaimed Wood Collection offers the Cosmopolitan Square Dining with a French Barrel Oak or Silver Pine top. Elementi's Sonoma, listed with us as the Elementi Workshop Fire Dining Table, pairs a GFRC top with a natural ashwood base at 29.5 inches high.

Dining chairs should be the upright, armless or low arm kind that tuck in, since the table edge needs to be reachable for plates. Keep place settings on the ledge and away from the burner area, and run the flame low while you eat so the fire is ambience rather than heat in your face.

Bar height fire tables and stools

Bar height fire tables suit terraces, rooftops and pool bars where people stand, perch and move around. Elementi's Rova and Montreal bar tables are about 41.7 inches high and conceal a standard 20 pound propane tank inside. With any bar table, choose stools with a footrest and a back if people will sit for long, and leave space to slide them out without stepping into the clearance zone.

Materials and color: repeat one, contrast one

Concrete fire tables look good with most outdoor furniture materials, which is part of their appeal. Teak and other warm woods soften a gray or dark concrete finish. Powder coated aluminum in black or charcoal sharpens a modern table. Woven seating adds texture next to a smooth concrete top.

The rule we use is to repeat one thing and contrast one thing. Repeat a color, so the fire table finish matches the frames of the chairs or the tone of the paving. Then contrast a texture or material, so the pieces do not blur together. A Prism table in Ebony with black aluminum frames and pale cushions is calm and crisp. An AFD table in Travertine with teak and oatmeal cushions is warm and quiet.

Some tables bring wood into the table itself. Prism's Elements collection (Hampton, Fairmont and Manchester) combines concrete with wood parts that Prism asks owners to treat with an IPE sealer once a year. Lids, tops and bases that make it a table

When the fire is off, a lid or top turns a fire table into a coffee, side or dining table. Several options exist across our brands.

• Prism makes a Tavola Lid for its Tavola tables.
• American Fyre Designs includes a flush GFRC cover with its Iron Saddle, Legend and Legend L.P. Select tables, so the burner area disappears into the table top.
• Elementi sells stainless steel lids for models such as the Granville, Lunar and Manhattan.
• Fire Pit Art makes steel table tops in 40, 43 and 51 inch sizes, and says the lid on its Magnum with Lid can be used as a fire snuffer or a tabletop.
• Waterstone sells its stone tops on standard, bar and gabion style bases, including the Standard Table Base and Bar Table Base.

Only place a lid or cover when the fire is off and the unit has cooled. AFD's instructions are to turn the unit off and let it cool completely before placing the cover, and to remove the cover before use.

Cushions, fabric and clearance

Outdoor furniture is mostly combustible: cushions, throws, wicker, wood and fabric umbrellas. Fire table manuals set clearances to combustible materials, and those distances differ by brand. Prism gives 4 feet on the sides and 6 feet above, American Fyre Designs gives 3 feet from the unit edge and 6 feet above, and Elementi gives 48 inches from the sides and back. Follow the clearances in your unit's manual when you set the furniture, and keep them when furniture moves during a party.

Small habits help. Choose seating heavy enough that it does not creep toward the fire. Store cushions away from the table when the space is not in use. And keep umbrellas and shade sails out of the overhead clearance entirely.

What height fire table works with lounge chairs?

A lounge height table, roughly the height of the seat cushion, works best with sofas and deep chairs. Published examples include the American Fyre Designs Legend at 14.5 inches, the Contempo at 15.5 inches and the Iron Saddle at 16.5 inches, and the Prism Embarcadero 60 at 16 inches. Can you eat at a fire table?

Yes, at a dining height model. American Fyre Designs makes the Cosmopolitan Square Dining at 29 inches and the Fiesta Dining at 28 inches, and Elementi's Sonoma stands 29.5 inches. Keep plates and glasses on the ledge, away from the burner area, and run the flame low during the meal. Pair the table with upright dining chairs and plan the layout around the clearances in the manual.

What stools go with a bar height fire table?

Choose bar stools sized for a counter or bar around 40 inches or a little higher, with a footrest, and with a back if guests will sit for a while. Only fit a lid once the fire is off and the unit has cooled completely, and remove it before lighting.
